Who is QUMS for?

Established in 1912, QUMS (pronounced "kwums") is a non-auditioned choir based at the University of Queensland. We offer a friendly environment in which music lovers of all ages and from all walks of life can enjoy singing a variety of works. We perform music of all genres and eras, Renaissance to modern, in a wide range of venues across Brisbane. QUMS is one of the few non-auditioned choirs in Brisbane.

While we are primarily a UQ student-run organisation (and actively encourage all UQ students with an interest in singing to join), QUMS is also open to all adult members of the public. We have no limits or expectations regarding musical ability, and there are no auditions.

When do you rehearse?

QUMS rehearses at UQ's St Lucia campus every Wednesday night from 7.00 PM to 9.30 PM, with a tea break in the middle, throughout the academic year. We tend to take a mid-year break, and we extend past Semester 2 into December for the carolling season. Keep an eye on our calendar for rehearsal locations, as these sometimes change week to week depending on other UQ class bookings.

How much does it cost?

Our fee structure is designed to be affordable for most:

Membership Type   Fees per Semester     Fees per Year
  Tertiary Student $3 $60
Other Concession (non-student concession card holders)   $55 $100
  Adult $90 $170
Carolling (just for November & December) $10 N/A

If you'd like to join us, or are just curious to see what we're about, grab a cheap monthly membership and try us out. You can register your membership here.

Do you do anything other than singing on a Wednesday night?

Yes!

As well as regular Wednesday rehearsals, we occasionally hold additional sectional rehearsals, where each section can concentrate on their own part. These sectionals usually run for an hour or two. Section Leaders organise them in consultation with the members of their section. They are generally on weekends, but sometimes on weekday evenings, depending on what works best for the majority of the section.

QUMS also holds day camps and weekend rehearsal camps from time to time. Day camps are full-day rehearsal workshops, usually held on campus on a Saturday. Weekend rehearsal camps run over a whole weekend at an out-of-town campsite. As well as a chance to intensively workshop and polish repertoire ahead of performances, these occasions are a lot of fun, with time to relax and socialise, plus activities such as the Camp Revue.

We're not all work and no play, though. We keep a busy social calendar throughout the year, from weekly coffee after rehearsal, to barbecues on campus, to the end-of-year formal Academic Dinner. There's always something planned, and the social events are a great way to get to know your fellow choristers better.
